What to wear in Roatán: a packing list from the island

Roatán is a long, thin island off the north coast of Honduras, in the Bay Islands. It is warm every month of the year, the reef starts a few metres from the sand, and most days end with wet hair and sandy feet. VIANY.DIXON was designed here, so this is less a travel guide than a list of what we actually wear.

The weather, in one paragraph

Expect highs around 28–32 °C (82–90 °F) and real humidity. February to August is the dry, breezy stretch. From roughly October to January the island gets its rain — usually short, heavy showers followed by sun, not whole grey days. The sun is strong year-round, and the reef is right there, so bring reef-safe sunscreen.

What earns a place in the bag

• Two swimsuits. One dries while you wear the other. You will be in the water more than you think.
• A rashguard. For snorkelling and boat days, UPF beats reapplying sunscreen on your back every hour.
• Light layers. Linen and cotton. Nothing heavy, nothing that holds water.
• Hat and sunglasses. Midday shade is a strategy here.
• Reef-safe sunscreen and a light repellent. The repellent is for dusk on the beach, when the sand flies come out.
• A dry bag. Phone, cash and a shirt stay dry on the boat.
• Small bills. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere in the tourist areas; lempiras are handy for small things.
• A light rain layer if you are travelling in the wet months.

Shoes: two pairs do the whole trip

This is the part people get wrong, so we will be specific.

One pair that gets wet. Water shoes or sturdy sandals for boats, snorkelling beaches and the sandy road through West End. Anything you would be sad to drown.

One pair that slides on. For dinner in West End, the resort, the ferry, the flight home. The trick is a shoe that goes on with sand still on your feet and looks finished the moment it is on. That is exactly what our slip-ons are for: a cushioned insole, a crystal-trimmed sole, no laces. They come in white, black, bronze, gold and rose gold.

To be clear: they are not water shoes. They are the pair for the walk to dinner, not the swim before it.

If you are here for a cruise day

Ships come into Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole. Most people head to West Bay Beach, roughly 20–25 minutes by taxi from either port. Pack light for the day: swimsuit under your clothes, a towel, sunscreen, a little cash, and a slip-on you can kick off at the sand and step back into for the ride back.

Evenings

Roatán is casual everywhere. A sundress or a linen shirt with a clean pair of slip-ons counts as dressed up by island standards, and nobody will ask you to do more.
